Malice Domestic is a reader-author convention held in late April or early May each year at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland. “Established in 1989, Malice Domestic® is an annual “fun fan” convention saluting the traditional mystery—books best typified by the works of Agatha Christie.” And who doesn’t love a great Agatha Christie mystery!
The genre is loosely defined as mysteries which contain no explicit sex or excessive gore or violence.
This year, D.E. Ireland (Meg and Sharon) appeared on a panel called Murder Most English with Alyssa Maxwell, Deanna Rayburn, and Christine Trent — chatting about British mysteries and their series, with lots of great details. Besides our panel, there are plenty of others focused on all the subgenres of mystery — YA, contemporary, short story, historicals set in America, humor in mystery, PI, bookstore, crafting, or “foodie” mysteries… You name it, they’ve got it!!
This year Kathryn Hall Paige received the Lifetime Achievement Award, Victoria Thompson was the Guest of Honor, and Hank Phillippi Ryan served as Toastmaster.
Each attendee gets a bag full of books supplied by the publishers, and there’s free swag (bookmarks, postcards, tea or candy wrapped in bags – all designed to entice readers), plus lots of chances to meet authors in the hallway or lobby, to listen to them discuss writing in general . It’s great stuff, and great fun to walk around meeting friends, authors, and other readers.
If you LOVE reading cozy or traditional mysteries, this is THE PLACE to be!
